Written by Gary on December 18, 2006 – 5:10 am -Welcome to the web site for Northern Suburbs Housing Co-operative Inc. – the largest housing co-operative in South Australia. The co-operative was incorporated as the “Northern Suburbs Aged Housing Association” in February 1981.
In March 1992 under the “South Australian Co-operative & Community Housing Act, 1991” the Association changed its name to Northern Suburbs Housing Co-operative Inc.
Northern Suburbs Housing Co-operative provides long term, stable, secure, affordable, rental accomodation for people aged 55 years and over who have a low income and do not own a residential property and like the concept of being involved in their organisation.

What is a Housing Co-operative?
A housing co-operative is a non-profit community organization that is democratically run by its members. A housing co-operative provides stable, secure, long-term, affordable rental accommodation to people of low income who are in need.
Why is it Different?
Housing co-operative tenants are members of their co-operative. They are actively encouraged to become involved in the management of their Co-operative, and have a direct say in how things will be done.
Housing co-operatives also take responsibility for purchasing their own properties, and arrange for the conversion or upgrade of these properties to suit their members.
Many housing co-operatives also undertake “new build work”, where they assist in the design and construction of new homes which are then offered to their members to rent.
Housing co-operatives have designed and created many very innovative developments from this type of work.
Government housing in South Australia is provided by the South Australian Housing Trust. Public housing offered to tenants does not allow the tenant any say in the way in which their property is managed.
